Bélesta is located in the Languedoc-Roussillon, in the heart of the Pyrénées-Orientales, at the centre of a triangle defined by Montpellier/Barcelona/Toulouse. In Northern Catalonia, between sea and mountains, the P-O offers a great diversity of landscapes: from the snowy heights of the Pyrenees to the orchards and vineyards of the plains, which plunge towards a Mediterranean bordered by fine sandy beaches and rocky coastlines.
The name of Bélesta de la Frontière is a reminder that this village once marked the border between the Roussillon and the Fenouillèdes. As you stroll around the village, you’ll find traces of this frontier.
From its elevation of 370 m in altitude, Bélesta is possessed of a picturesque charm. On the flank of a mountain, the village, oriented towards the south, faces the majestic Mt Canigou – the emblematic mountain of the Catalans (2784m). The village is dominated by its medieval chateau that today houses a museum of pre-history. The garrigue, the white, black, grey, red and ochre rocks and the vineyards fashion the surrounding landscape.
